FALL is sure here, but we are having temperatures in the 80’s this week here in Denver. It looks to be dry and warm for the next week to 10 days. Since it will be nice weather, we are escaping for a day up to B.V. to finish up closing up camp and do some prospecting…….and picture taking. The Apsens should be in prime color.

Gold is showing positive this week with it reaching above $900 several times. Stock market isn’t sure what it thinks and the bailout……well…...your guess is as good as anyone’s in Congress. Oh, here’s an oldy but goody, “If con is the opposite of pro, what does that make congress the opposite of?” LOL! Are you ready for the debates tonight?

Get ready for the Arkansas River to close to motorized equipment for the winter early this next week on Oct. 1st. Cache Creek will be open until November 30th. Yeah, I know. The summer is over and we don’t have many days left to find gold with. I have a bunch of magazines and new books to catch up on and read, but not quite yet.

Wow! It seems like there isn’t much to write about. Remember when we had water so high on the Arkansas River in July that the rafters couldn’t get a raft under the bridge below the numbers? With B.V. already having had 5 inches of snow in September, we may be in for another winter with lots of snow. Then again, Mother Nature may throw us a curve and make it a mild winter. I haven’t had time to look and the sunspot activity reports lately to know what to expect. I’m sure I will be wearing my sweats and gloves to pan out cons whatever it does.

I’ll have pictures for you of what Cache Creek looks like after the trees were removed next week. I’m also anxious to see how much more dirt has been moved since the first of the month. Sounds like there was another incident up there right after we left. This time we know who it is and this person has been a problem in the past. Shouting matches and bad manners simply have no place in public. If you don’t like the rules, go somewhere else! We’ve worked d***** hard to keep what we have open for the public. We’d all appreciate it if some people would not do whatever they can to ruin it for the rest of us.

Miss us? Well, we sure had a ball running around for the two weeks we were gone. We have been so far away from an internet connection that we were only able to connect up twice while we were away. Since then, I have been blogging about every other day. There is a lot more to tell in the next couple of weeks before we are off again for 17 days, beginning with the Colorado State Gold Panning Championships.

First off, if you haven’t read the blog posted before the newsletter, go there next and read it. It concerns Cache Creek and our efforts to find the person or persons who were reportedly running people off with a gun this past week. If you have information you can contact us at info@hookedongold.com or by replying to the blog which will be screened for content before it will be published. If you do not wish the post to be published, you may say so in your post and we will not publish the post.

BLM representatives were in the Cache Creek area this past week and have made further recommendations for the area. GPOC will be working with them to insure this area stays open for prospectors. The biggest concerns were undermining of trees and safety. “Coyote” holes are being dug into walls with 3 feet or more of rock overhang. This is extremely dangerous. Another concern is how to monitor how long a highbanker is there and the camping going on in the parking lot. When you camp in the day use parking lot there is little space for parking. There are ample camping spots near the lot, so please Do Not Camp in the Parking Lot. Kiosks, sign up sheets and portable restrooms are being worked on.

The previous open area north of Buena Vista, that we were all under the impression was unclaimable, is now all under claim and is no longer open to the public for prospecting. A real shame, too, as it was easy access for anyone with limited abilities to get to for some fun and some gold.

Hopefully I will find time this evening to post the streamflows. If not, you can find them on the link below. Flows are down statewide, but still high enough to watch out for. Rafters have begun rafting the numbers on the Arkansas….they can finally get under the bridge! Stay safe out there and FIND SOME GOLD!

Gold is way up this week, and we will be on our way to our first two weeks away this summer. Hooked on Gold will not be publishing a newsletter until after the 15th due to very limited internet service where we will be. Form requests will be answered as we have time until the middle of the month, as we are in prime gold finding season and have many things planned with friends. We will also be spending some time looking at properties and land while we decide what we will be doing next year. The two weeks will fly by and we will be back at home before we know it. Blog posts and pictures will get posted when we have a connection, too.

Have you been finding gold? If so, let us know. We love sharing our experiences with others, and there have been a lot of questions to answer this season. Please continue to be careful around the water. Run off this year will be long, and there is still a lot of snow to melt in the high country. We have run up for a day, here and there, and are amazed at the amount of snow still on the mountains. A drier pattern looks to be with us until monsoon season comes in around the middle of July. The Fourth is ONE WEEK AWAY!

The site template continues to plague me. Now, the Firefox browser is showing the text lettering all wrong, but everything else shows it correctly. Even viewing pages being worked on with Firefox gives me error messages and then refuses to open the page again. If you are using Firefox as your browser you will see some text in the colors it is meant to be in and other text in yellow. Can’t seem to get it to show correctly, and two pages now will not open for editing. Can’t even get a Fourth of July message posted!

Did you try the new toolbar yet? I have had many downloads this past week. I can’t seem to stop playing with the slot machine, myself, and it sure has been a lot of fun. You can find a download button on almost every page under the goldpanner on the left.

River update. Another river drowning occurred this past week near Buena Vista to a kayaker. Please e careful around the high water. Stream Flows will be updated for this week, but will not be while we are away. Hopefully, by the time we get back the rivers will be subsiding a bit, but I expect them to be high well into August. The Ski areas reported the first of June that they will not be in their “mud” season until this next week, a good two months late. In the mean time, you can look up the flows for yourself at:

Do you have gold fever? Boy, we sure do! The first day of summer arrives today at 5:59 p.m. mountain time, and along with it, the welling up of pent up winter frustrations at being cooped up way too long. The first of this years’ gold finds make us pine for the time to be away and wandering the mountains in search of gold. The yellow metal is back up this week, but we wouldn’t care if it was or not. The search for gold spurs us out the door and up the creek! We got camp opened up and found we had been having squatters coming in, making a mess and leaving their party goodies all over the place! No food to be found inside, so they had a BYOF event and couldn’t eat all they brought with them. Glad we went when we did, or it would have been MUCH worse. Plugged up the hole they were using and spent almost an hour vacuuming before we could unpack. OMG, I hate mice!!!!!!

Our golden camp will be closing this year, much to everyone’s sadness. We have known for a few years that this was coming, but hoped it would not be for another year or two. Alas, our caretaker is not well, and this past winter was particularly hard, and so this is our last season in our wonderful camp. We will spend some time this summer to investigate property and other alternatives for next year.

OK, now for some FUN. I found an interesting community toolbar that has been a hoot to test. You will find an example of what the toolbar looks like on the home page of http://www.hookedongold.com/ . I and a friend have spent literally HOURS playing with it. It has updates on the site, games, music, T.V., weather, news, and so much more. I put all my e-mail accounts on it and it pings me when anyone of them gets a message. The dropdown bar lets me click an address and check them without having to log in to all of them. You can add gadgets that you like to it very easily for a custom toolbar. You will find a download button under the “search” space on the menu to your left to download it and try it RIGHT NOW! There is even a chat function, and a Babylon word translator. Very KEWEL!

River update. 2 people have died this past week in rafting accidents. The snow is melting super fast right now, and the streams and rivers are raging. Be careful around it! The Arkansas was reported to have been at over 3700CFS yesterday when the latest accident occurred. Stream flow guides are posted for today and you can check them any day at:

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TO ALL OF YOU GOLD PROSPECTORS! Take a moment to remember all who have fallen in defense of this country. I have posted a Memorial Day poem for you called The American Hero. Enjoy your BBQ’s, and don’t forget what has been sacrificed for you to be able to do so.

Are you watching gold recover from its low a few weeks ago? The ETF funds have stopped taking profits, and so the gold market will begin to recover from the sell off. The stock market is expected to take some more hits with banks having additional losses from the mortgage lending mess and the rise in oil prices. Gold is expected to rise as the stock market falls, this time, and not follow the stock market in its present downward trend. We aren’t looking for a total meltdown of the markets as there are many parts of the economy that are strong, and the weak banking sector is pulling everything else down. The oil situation IS affecting all businesses as gas and energy prices rise, but we are confident that the U.S. economy will pull itself up by its bootstraps and find a better footing on the other side of the storm. Besides…..copper is holding around $4.00, a good sign that the world economy is doing OK. Oh, half way mark for the gold rally is around $940. Look for a possible pull back when it gets there.

Are you having a “gas attack”? Boy, everyone I know is! Congress has had the big oil guys back on the hill to testify about the black gold. Same story as last month. 4 cents of every dollar goes to their profit line. Where does the rest go? Taxes, refining and the fall of the dollar, and competition in the market. Taxes you understand, you have to refine oil to get gasoline, and if the dollar has half its value, oil costs double. No confusion there. But what about the competition factor? Sure, China and India are making it tougher to buy oil, and the oil producing countries who have control over their oil have said they will not pump more, but a new report I saw this week added another competitor to the mix. Hedge funds. Yup, you read me right. Oil and gas hedge funds now control almost as much oil and gas as China buys, so you can add the stock market to the major players in black gold.

Am I off topic? I don’t know. I always think that the price of gas and equipment and laws for our public lands are relevant to our topic of gold. They all affect how and where you can go and find gold, not to mention how much it will cost you and how you will get there. Once you have found your gold, all of these things effect your bottom line as to how profitable your gold finding trip is. Laws are being changed that will effect where you can find gold and how much it will cost you to do so on public lands. These changes will pertain to anyone who goes afield to find minerals, gemstones, fish, pick up plain old rocks, file a claim, or enjoy the out of doors. There are revisions to the mining laws that could require to you to file a plan of operation, file a bond, and have a use permit to use a 4 inch dredge, highbank, collect gemstones, or collect rocks on BLM or Forest Service public lands. As stated right now, they will not provide an agency to get a bond from, so you can’t get one even if you file. HMMMM. This sounds like they want you to “Keep Out” of “Public Land”. How come “Public Land” is getting put into protected status so the “Public” can’t use it?

In case you have been away from a T.V., newspaper or computer, we had a tornado run through the north eastern part of Colorado yesterday with the worst damage west of Greeley in the town of Windsor. One life was lost as he ran for cover, and hundreds of homes were damaged. Trees were uprooted and evergreens snapped off their trunks leaving large stumps standing. The whole town and surrounding areas were pelted with up to golf ball sized hail. One report was of hail as big as small oranges. The most unusual aspect of this storm was its tract. It moved from the southeast to the northwest….exactly opposite of the usual tornado path.

News on the Odyssey Marine was out this last week. The Odyssey, to remind you, is the treasure recovery ship that found the debris of a sunken ship off the coast of England last year, containing substantial treasure including gold and silver coins. The Spanish government seized the Odyssey claiming the treasure belonged to them shortly after the announcement was made that the sunken ship had been found. The Spanish Government has sued Odyssey alleging that the found ship is to them as the USS Arizona is to the U.S., as a memorial. They also wanted the court to believe that “looting” it would be a crime against humanity. The Odyssey argues that the 200 year old site contains only debris, no bodies or actual ship intact, and that under international law it is fair game for recovery. This looks to be in court for a long time and quite possibly stay there for some time. I heard someone ask if the countries where the gold and silver originally was taken from have any claim against the Spanish government for taking it from them in the first place. And so it goes on and on.

I saw a report on what might be called the “golden liquid” that may be interesting to you. As most of you know, Denver will be hosting the Democratic National Convention this August, and one of their big things is that everything be as “green” as possible. Yesterday, Coors Brewery donated ethanol to them for use in E85 vehicles that will be used to get everyone around. I found it interesting to read that Coors has been making ethanol since 1996, and produces 3 million gallons a year of the fuel alternative. They make ethanol from their rejected or damaged beer, and mash waste. Now, if Coors can do this, how many other brewers and distillers can….or do. Do we really need to grow corn? The more I read about this, the more waste products I see that can and are being used without committing large tracts of farm land and additional fresh water to it.

Arizona gold prospecting is on our minds this week. We spent a very nice three days with our grandsons after Easter playing Clue 4 hours straight, and four games of Monopoly. It looks like we will have good weather for our trip and our week away. Be advised that e-mail will be slow this next week as we will not have a connection close by. There probably will be no newsletter next Friday, but I will post a few times to the blog so you can keep up with what we are doing. Maybe even PICTURES!

The Arkansas River will be open for motorized equipment this Tuesday, and there is no snow in Salida right now. Buena Vista still has two feet of snow on the ground.

Gold is down again this week and it looks like it may stay down through the end of the quarter, with profit taking being a large part of the slide, as well as the stronger dollar and higher oil is keeping it down. However analysts expect this downtrend to be short lived and that it will approach and possibly exceed $1,000 once again.

The Colorado legislature is looking at putting up toll booths to collect tolls through the Tunnels during peak days and hours to discourage people from going into or coming out of the mountains all at once. A solution to the I70 problem needs to be found, and they will need money to do it. Since we have Democrats once again controlling our legislature and governorship, we can expect them to tax us under the table in more ways than we can count, and tolls to pay for infrastructure they let go for so many years in the 80’s and 90’s would be par for them. You will need three or more people in your car to avoid the tolls. That means truckers would get caught and those who can now travel in the HOV lanes in Denver would need to pay the tolls through the Tunnels on I70. Oh, it WILL cost money to put the booths up and people to run them, too. This is supposed to cut down on congestion, but if everyone is stopping to pay a toll, Me thinks perhaps it will add to the problem. Naw, that can’t be right. Probably my lisdecxia cropping up again. Gotta go pack the snake gaters. Tah.

Family matters this past week has delayed many things. Work on the new Hooked on Gold template is still going on, but finding time to get three schedules together will be a challenge as our schedule must now include taking care of parents who are not well. Take heart! We will be putting up the new site by March or shortly after.

The hottest news on gold this week has been the controversy over the International Monetary Fund (IMF) plans to sell around 400 tonnes of gold beginning in April. Gold prices will probably drop temporarily as they sell it off. For those of you looking for the next entry point for gold, this could be your chance.

Platinum is going above $2050 today on continued fears about supplies after the South African mine closed a few weeks ago due to power problems with the nationally owned utilities. Some are even calling it “panic buying”.

LEADVILLE is having emergency meetings concerning what to do about a mine drainage tunnel that may collapse and send thousands of contaminated mine water into the Arkansas also possibly threatening nearby homes. There is currently talk about having the EPA pump the water out. If you’ve ever been to Leadville, you might have a sense of what the residents think about the EPA.

Steve Veach was the speaker at the GPOC general meeting this past week and gave a report on a new technology being used to find microscopic gold particles in core samples without crushing and fire assaying. The new High Resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography (HRXCT) takes MRI quality x-rays in three dimensions that can be rolled and turned to see exactly what is in the sample. Truly amazing to watch.

Another item this week that caught my was the fact that DeBeers is offering refunds on many of their diamonds sold in the past 2 years. If you have one, you might want to check in to it. They have recently decided to settle a lawsuit on their monopoly and the possibility of having gouged consumers during that time.

WOW! Are you watching gold skyrocket this week? Man, I don't think I would be selling any gold right now until it settles down and I can get a great price for it. I am wondering what the price will be at the Tucson show in Feb.

As promised, I am continuing the discussion of how gold is formed outside quartz. There is and has been among old prospectors, the ongoing belief that not all gold is associated with quartz, and there are many examples throughout the U.S. gold strikes that support the theory that gold can also be depostied in the fissures and breaks in rock such as slate and certain schists. This especially true if the rock has a brownish red to red color to it.

Red clay or dirt is an indication of mineralization and a high concentration of iron. While hot, gold will show a affinity to iron, but when sulphur is introduced, the iron will let go of the gold and attach itself to the sulphur where it precipitates out creating iron pyrite. This leaves the gold in the solution to find it's own place to settle, and that can be in rock that has a space for it to crystallize in. Sometimes that is around quatz crystals, and sometimes in and around other rocks with spaces.

There are many examples of this type of evidence in California, Alaska, Nevada, and even Colorado. I am sure you all have heard of Farncom Hill in the Breckenridge district. I have found small pieces of wire gold when going through the slate there with a small backpack type highbanker on a claim we had permission to be on many years ago. I have since wondered about the other slate type of rock I often see in other mining districts. From now on, I WILL be taking samples to test this theory out while I am out finding gold.

What a golden time of year! Do you have that smell of new fallen snow at your house? Some of us have had too much of it, and some nothing but ice storms. Hopefully everyone has their electricity back on. The Holiday is just around the corner, so I hope you have most of your Christmas shopping finished and the cards in the mail. They say the biggest mailing day will be this Monday, so get it off before then. You may be lucky enough to have post offices in your area that are staying open longer tomorrow.

If you have been watching the price of gold this past week, you have seen it go from a high of around $815 back to just below what it was last Friday. I am reading more and more material and financial papers that are agreeing that gold has and will continue to follow the stock market in it's ups and downs. If you look at both charts for that past 5 years, they are pretty much mirror images. What does that mean for gold next year? It can go either way. If the markets are up Gold will probably follow, and if it is down, ditto. Yeah, cop out, you say. But, this is a new trend in gold that the world has not seen before, and all are still waiting to see how it plays out. If gold is no longer the inflation hedge that everyone has always turned to, what will be?

China and India will continue to demand more of the world's gold every year, so the price must reflect that pressure. Who knows how much old gold is still in the vaults of the world's banks, and they trade it all the time as a commodity, often manipulating the price as they did much of '07. I find the ups and downs of the gold price in recent years to be nearly unpredictable, as there are so many variables that can and do effect the price. One thing remains sure. People will ALWAYS collect and horde gold. They love the yellow color, it's special properties, how it looks against the skin, and how heavy it feels.

New regulations are coming out this next year for Cache Creek usage. I went into some detail about it in the last blog, so if you haven't read it, you might want to do so.

GPOC members and anyone wanting to join the group needs a "heads up" as to the membership dues change in '08. Singles will be $25.00 and families $30.00 a year, the first price raise in 15 years. The cost of maintaining the claims goes up each year, as well as things like postage and paper. The new GPOC website is coming along nicely, although it isn't published as of yet. When that happens, I'll blog it here, so watch for it. They are ready to add their old store back in, as well, so you will have another source for your "stuff." I am hiring an expert early next year to help me with the problems I ca not seem to figure out on my own, and have purchased a new template for the website. A new look and feel will go along with it, and, with luck, I can put up a page for all to look at before the whole thing goes live and you are in shock and not sure where you are. Colors look like they will be in the brown, golden yellow, and burnt orange ranges, and it will have a more denim/western feel. Right now you can find the Christmas giffs that are sprinkled around the site for your enjoyment, and after the holidays I should be able to get some new video clips working in the pages as well. Larry always gets to it first and he isn't finished yet.)
