NEWS

It's SPRING!  Can you smell it?  How is the weather in your part of the world? We are in our typical spring pattern with very warm days and then snow and 20 degrees. We have yet to officially reach 70 degrees, though, but the 68 was really nice.

Gold prospecting news is scarce and non existent, and so I have not had much to write about the past couple of weeks. As March comes to a close soon, we are still looking for weather good enough for our first weekend gold panning and sluicing trip. Birthdays and snow have been hampering our efforts to play in the dirt and water. The ice has a bit to do with it, too. LOL! With all this ‘time on my hands’ you would think I would make a bit more progress with website and blog changes, but, alas, time seems to slip through my fingers like sand through a gold pan. Perhaps I will find gold at the bottom like I do in my pan.

I hear via the grape vine that there is a lot of gold prospecting activity going on at Point Bar near Salida. The weather there should be rather nice right now between storms. I also hear that the new claimants of what used to be the ‘Star Jade’ located just north of the GPOC claim that is north of Buena Vista, are letting it be known that prospectors will no longer be welcome on that claim and to keep out. They are placing a notice in the GPOC Quill informing members that the claim is closed to all prospectors and that they must not look for gold on that claim. These new claimants are board members of GPOC.

The only news I found that was interesting enough to share with you in the past 2 weeks is this bit about another use for gold in the medical field.

http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2010-03/gold-nanoparticles-and-lasers-kill-crazy-cat-lady-brain-parasite Since we all know that we do not use up gold, I wondered after reading it how they removed the gold from the body.  If it was left in place, would too much sun on your head heat your brain up too much? LOL! That’s probably more from me than you want.
Until next week…….
Good Prospecting to You,
Shirley (MQS)

Mining the Gem Show

It's Gem Show Weekend!  That Means Emeralds in 18K Gold For Me.

Well, this show has crept on me and now I realise I won't have a Gazette tomorrow or Saturday.

For anyone that is going to be using the Point Bar area or Cache Creek for gold prospecting, I know of several people who have already gotten their notice level equipment packets in the mail they requested, and they say the new packets have a lot of information in them including maps to the Arkansas open public areas.

Weather is starting to warm up enough that we may get out in the next two weeks.  We have family plans along with this gem show for the next few weeks, but by mid March we should be able to get once or twice......finally.  We have gotten out every winter before this to metal detect for coins before now, but this year the ground has just been frozen solid.

Remember that Day Light Savings time begins Sunday, March 14th.....Spring ahead.  See you on the flip side.

Good Prospecting to You,
Shirley

NEWS
It was tough to find any news on gold or gold prospecting this past week. The Olympics dominated everything, as it should, so everything that had a link to gold was about gold medals.

Gold made a bit of a comeback in the markets late this week so those of us who will be prospecting for gold soon are happy the price is only down 20 cents over last week. Of course, it does help to make the backbreaking work a little easier to take when you know your gold will bring a nicer price when you sell it……if you sell it.

Some more information has come our way concerning the Point Bar claims that were claimed last year by someone from Texas. As you will recall, he listed one on E-Bay right away and sold it. He then found at least two others to buy into a third of the claims that were left, and then sold the last third on E-Bay this last week. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure I’d like to own a third of three mining claims with two other people I may or may not know. These types of partnership never turn out well, but hopefully those involved here will get along. We all know that won’t happen, though. Remember also that these claims are not patented and so the claim owners will only be allowed to camp there 2 weeks out of six. Oh, and it looks like our friend from Texas made about 8-10 thousand dollars on the claims that he will probably never visit again and has made a mess of Colorado claims that have been available to the public for a long time now. ‘Moneygrubber’ is all I can say.

OK enough of my soapbox as this whole deal makes me sick and I try not to be to critical of prospectors, but I’m pretty sure this person is no prospector and was only interested in the money that could be made by selling these claims, which they did in less than a year. However, I also have new news about the water. Read on.

It seems the person who originally did the platting of the new claims was not entirely accurate and there is substantially more water available to the open area. I am just now reading this new information and the map provided isn’t real clear, so I will need a little more time to decipher where the open area begins and ends. The claim owners may not be aware of this yet, and so their markers will most probably have to be moved.

Spring is almost upon us and the opening of the Arkansas River to motorized equipment is on MONDAY! While we continue to be plagued with colder than usual weather, warmer weather will prevail at some point. That means we will all be able to do more prospecting for gold soon. Even metal detecting for coins has been impossible with the ground staying stubbornly frozen. Summer plans continue to be made, though, and our new areas for exploration are numerous. Setting up camp for this summer will also be interesting. I’m not sure I will have any kind of internet connection, so we may be hit and miss with blogging as connections permit. We are truly looking forward to working with Chad Watkins this summer and helping him get TinPan Prospecting up and running strong. Visit us this summer for some interesting gold prospecting when you get tired of fighting the public areas.

Trying to find other news from around the web was pretty difficult this past week. I visited a lot of blogs that had two short paragraphs with little content or they didn’t really have anything to do with the subject of gold, but Florida golden sunsets, etc. I did find a couple of interesting videos to share. The first one is an interesting one about one way to find underground streams and using culverts as a sluice box at
http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-pan-gold-ancient-riverbeds-high-benches-302352 , and another from Australia testing out a new small highbanker. Looks like it works pretty good, too. http://downlinesecret.net/33949/highbanker-banjo-first-test-alluvial-gold-prospecting-in-australia

Off to Jefferson County Fairgrounds and some rock hunting under roof. Have a great week out there, and if you are on the Arkansas let us know how you are doing. Oh, and before I forget, Blogger’s new platform has changed again and is even more difficult to work around and so I will be moving this blog to a wordpress blog and using another of my hookedongold domains to run it with. I’ve been waffling about this for almost 2 years now and this final change has pushed me there. I’ll have a new template and format so the look will be a bit different, but more in my control, and we know everything is all about control, right? LOL! The old one is looking a bit messy and I can use some better aps in the wordpress version. It probably will take me a few weeks to get everything set up, so you won’t be surprised next week, but it will happen as soon as I can get everything uploaded to the server and arranged in the new template. I’ve used wordpress for a couple of other blogs I’ve run and like it much better. Hopefully you will, too. That’s it for me. How about you? :>D

Until next week…….
Good Prospecting to You,
Shirley (MQS)

If you haven’t checked out the Prospecting Community Network you might want to. We have a great group started with several already blogging and getting involved. You will be able to view the main page when you pull the site up to decide if it is a place you would like to hang out at.

It’s Not My Fault! The Gazette is a day late because we were gone for two days helping Tin Pan Prospecting teach gold panning to the 4th grade class in Fairplay…..on the S. Platte, no less; in the snow; it was 22 degrees. Welcome to Colorado! :>D After staying in Colorado Springs that night with friends, we then attended Dan Grenard’s (Our BLM department head GPOC has worked with for many years) retirement party in Canyon City on Friday and were not back at home until late. Hence, the Saturday morning Gazette publishing.

Gold didn’t move much this week, as you can see from the quotes at the top. After reaching $1071 it has retreated as expected. Silver, however, is up at $17.66 and its’ long term outlook is much better than gold’s for overall price increase in the near future. It has a LONG way to go to reach that 16 to one ratio it has historically held with gold.

It snowed last week, as I mentioned, and we are expecting more snow this week here in Denver. I have had several inquiries about prospecting at Cache Creek in November, and I have no idea what it is doing up there. We were in the area but didn’t have enough time to make the trek that far north on the Arkansas on Thursday to actually see what is going on up there weather wise. If any one has info on Cache Creek, please leave a comment here for everyone. The weather is turning much colder pretty fast all over the central and eastern parts of Colorado with the western side staying mild.

And so, Point Bar is a subject that is being discussed all over, now, with the claims that have been filed. While I did blog about this a few weeks ago, I want to go back over this a little more to make sure I haven’t missed anything I need to discuss with you. First, even if there is a claim on an area, they do not own the water rights, which means the claimant cannot keep you out of the water. You can still access the water with your prospecting equipment anywhere on the point as long as the material you are using comes out of the public recreation area near the pit. Another item is that this person also cannot keep you from camping in the area. Having a claim on public land does not mean that anyone can keep you from camping on public BLM lands. This only means that no one else can prospect or mine there. You only have a claim on the minerals that might be found there and only you have the right to extract them. The claimant will now be required to properly post his area and do any reclamation of the area himself.

Several people in GPOC have asked why the club has not claimed this area for members. There are several reasons for this. First, is policing the area. The area has been an open area for prospecting for so long that it would have been nearly impossible to keep anyone who is not a GPOC member from prospecting the area. Second, once the claim is made the claimant is then responsible for any reclamation or damage repair involved with keeping the area. As an open area, GPOC can apply for grant money from the BLM to do damage repair and reclamation in public prospecting areas on the Arkansas River, and that would be money not coming out of our treasury. Third the amount of money that would be required to keep the area up would have been substantial. Look at what we go through to keep Beaver Creek claims open. When we have a plan of operation in place, damage and reclamation can cost upwards of $2,000 a year to keep up. Our dues are extremely cheap now and we would have to raise them to be able to keep up with costs on 4 claims on point bar. They were open to you the way it was. Why claim them and have the hassles. This claimant may not be able to keep up with what will be required, either and you may have them back in public hands in a year or two. GPOC’s grant for damage repair and reclamation will not have to be used in the claimants areas either, and can be used to keep up other public areas. How many of you actually used any of those areas? GPOC now has what is probably the best of those claims, and there are numerous reasons why we have those and not the others. How many of you have used those claims? The irrigation ditch is another thing the claimant will have to address as well. I also wonder how much cleanup and fire control he will have to deal with in this very well used recreation area.

I didn’t find any interesting links this week for you. Usually there is a lot going on, but this past week was pretty dead for news on gold or gold prospecting. I’ve probably taken enough of your time for now, anyway, so I’ll say TTFN and call it all good. Any questions? Comment here or you can email me. I’ll give it my best shot. If you comment here, you probably will get someone else to give their two cents worth, too. I can’t know everything….my head is too small. :>D

Point Bar Mother's Day Weekend '09

The Pit at Point Bar
One of five camps this weekend

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Everyone is having a great time this weekend at Point Bar State Recreational Area. Met some great people and everyone is finding gold. We all have some sore muscles, but the warm temps and getting out to play in the dirt has been enjoyed by all. Looking forward to another great day today, and putting more gold into our vial.

Weather here has been warm, although with wind. We saw this morning that they had about 3 inches of snow yesterday at Eldora and Denver was chilly with rain. Sure glad we are in Salida right now. :>D

Good Prospecting to You,
Shirley

I have a request from the Colorado State Department of Health for a link to information about the swine flu outbreak.
http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/epr You can also track swine flu from this website at http://mashable.com/2009/04/25/track-swine-flu
My own opinion: Wash your hands and no kissing if your partner is sick. Regular flu kills 30,000 + in the U.S. every year, and even more around the world, yet that is not considered an epidemic. Are governments and media attempting to divert your attention to what is really going on behind your back? I have to wonder at this tactic, all too often used, when something is not going well on Capitol Hill.

NEW! Prospecting Community Network! We have great group started with several already blogging and getting involved. You will be able to view the main page when you pull the site up to decide if it is a place you would like to hang out at.

Man, did you watch gold drop this week? Nearly got a nosebleed! LOL! Did you notice the Gazette was late? If so, I am sorry that I did not get it posted last Friday. With retirement plans going on, of course everything did not go as smoothly as I had hoped and there were many other things that jumped on the list of things to do. You know how it is. LOL!

The new prospecting forum/network is hopping with new members and questions to be answered, too, and it has taken a lot of time this past week along with everything else. Not complaining here, but we have been busy. Retirement parties went well, and Larry was very surprised when the Limo drove up to take us home on his last day at work.

Looks like, right now, we will have nice weather this next weekend for Let’s Go Gold Panning Days at Point Bar, sponsored by Woody and GPOC. It is always a lot of fun getting out with folks that weekend, so if you have a day or the weekend to come out and play, please join us Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday for some gold prospecting fun. You can find more info on this event at www.gpoc.com . After that we will be looking forward to a summer of prospecting. Everyone is tired of the gloomy weather and ready to get out and get away, as well as find some gold!

I will try to follow a format for the summer that will include links to information sites, questions and answers on prospecting, as well as pictures and information about what we are doing this summer, but this will be the last official Gazette for the summer. Let me know how you like the new format, and maybe I will just adapt the blog to that. I seem to have a problem doing both without it taking too much time.

In the news this past week; some links to information that went across the wires for you to read. The first one is about an interesting way to ‘prospect’ for gold by taking it from your employer http://www.jrdeputyaccountant.com/2009/05/woman-steals-500-pounds-of-gold-from.html . There has been a lot in the news recently concerning ‘protected status’ lands and wind and solar power. Most of the usable wind and solar power in located in the western part of the U.S. Legislators continue to put vast areas of public land into protected status here, and there is much debate about how to use the west’s wind and solar power with its’ demand for water and land for the panels and towers. There is also much debate about land access to be able to put this electric power into the grid via transmission lines. As legislators put more and more land into protected status, once clear avenues to the power grid are taken away before the project can be completed, thus wasting billions of dollars in the attempt to put this ‘green’ energy to use. There is also much debate on just how green this technology really is, when taken into context with manufacturing. However, I found website with some information about protected land in the west, with an accompanying map that shows all the protected land now in the west. You will notice that unprotected lands are in white. Here is the link to U. S. protected areas database article http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=2201 If you are wondering about how this pertains to prospecting for gold, all the darker areas will be harder for you to access or impossible. There is a lot of area out there that is already in protected status, or as I like to refer to it as wilderness without an act of Congress, and more is added all the time. Soon, they will have all of us trapped in small confined spaces where we cannot ‘hurt’ mother nature and wildlife. Lookin’ forward to it, aren’t you?

I wanted to say “Hi” to Travis who I saw at the GPAA show yesterday, and is a member of www.hookdongoldprospecting.ning.com . Hope to see a lot more of you this summer and as time goes on. That’s all for me this weekend. Gotta go and clean up after the open house. Ah, Monday may actually be a welcome relief! ;>D

NEWS

Are you set up at Point Bar for “Let’s Go Gold Panning Days” today? The three day event is always populated with prospectors from all over and is an excellent way to meet others and see all sorts of equipment in use.

The Western Mining Museum in Colorado Springs will be hosting their annual, reserved seating, prospectors’ orientation and information day May 17th. There will be speakers, demonstrations and fun for all, so get your reservation in NOW. Seating is already filling up fast.

Well, my nephew is now married and the wedding went off with very few hitches. The weather was a bit chilly while the ceremony was performed, but was pleasant enough for the time of year. A hawk was seen flying in the background as the bride and groom exchanged vows in the golden, setting sun. The Lyons setting was beautiful and very romantic, with breathtaking colors of red and cream adorning the outdoor ceremony and hall where the reception was held. A magical evening.

Ok, ok. Back to GOLD!!!! After a sharp downturn in the yellow metal last week, it is making a strong comeback, what with oil spiking above $125.50 and the dollar sliding still further into the dumper. Memorial Day is approaching and the traditional opening of the summer season, with gas prices expected to peak around $3.75 a gallon in June. All gold prospecting areas are expecting a rise in the number of people out there looking for gold. We have had many requests for information about many areas. If you have done that and we have not gotten back to you lately, we will. Life has a way of getting in the way sometimes, and we have had a few time challenges lately. Information IS coming your way next week. Thanks for your patience in advance. We have not forgotten you!

In the news is the number of additional acres of western lands being put into “protected status”, effectively creating wilderness areas without an act of Congress. Much of this land is being purchased with State and private dollars to effect land control in the name of habitat conservation. If you control the land, however, you control the people very effectively.

I read an interesting article this past week that concerned the repeal of the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 that has allowed the worldwide banking industry to return to their largesse that led to the Great Depression of the 1930’s. There is a possibility of it returning in the 2010’s due to this repeal, and the worldwide banking industries inability to restrain itself from repeating its’ mistakes of the past without government regulation. You can read this article at the kitco link here: http://www.kitco.com/ind/schoon/may052008.html You KNOW what I’m going to say now, right? You got it. BUY GOLD!!!!!

So, are you concerned about the recent slide of gold? Are you nervous that the gold bull market is over? Well, get over it. The long range charts are showing support price levels at around $835 to $850, and if it breaks out from there, it will most probably settle again around $750….a DEFINITE buying opportunity, and the up trend is at around $1200 by the end of the year. It might not get there quite that fast, but then again there is a lot of pressure on it to rise. The buying for the festival and marriage season in India is over, with a less than stellar buying season for the yellow metal. Apparently, the Indians are not thrilled with the high gold price and did not purchase as much this year as in previous years. On the mining end, less gold is being produced world than demand, and the South African problems with electrical power is persisting. On the stock side, the EFT fund GLD had its largest sell off at the end of the first quarter it has had since its inception as investors took profits. All of these indicators point to a rise in the price of gold.

Look for a couple of new articles this week under the “Articles of Interest” page this next week. More pages coming in the next few weeks. Under the “Gold in Colorado” page, I will be adding information to the Fairplay page, and starting a page on the Ouray/Silverton/Creede areas.

World Open Panning website has this year’s world wide panning competitions listed and they add more all the time. A great site to visit: www.worldopenpanning.homestead.com .

Until next week……

Gold and GPOC's new board and club dues increase

RAINBOWS We all know that the rainbow ends in Colorado, but did you know that they both do?

So are you watching gold blow through $750 today? I've been doing computer cleanup for hours, now, and have been watching it steadily climb from $740 yesterday.

Gold Prospector's of Colorado October meeting is for the election of officers and they have retained, basically, the same board they had last year. "New" officers will take over January 1st. The club is still looking for a treasurer, so any of you GPOC members out there that have accounting skills can still step up and do your duty.

The attending members were asked to vote on a proposal by the board to increase dues by $5.00 a year beginning in January 2008. It was passed by unanimous vote. This is the first increas in dues in about 15 years, and still puts the dues well below even "social" prospecting clubs. With the increase fuel, materials, reclamation, store items, postage, paper, printing, etc, the increase still is not keeping up with our added expenses. Those who attend the meetings and volunteer at the demos are helping to cover those costs more than members who are outside the Colorado area. There was a proposal to increase dues substantially to those who live out of state. That propasal will be discussed by the board and may come up for voting early next year. Input to these ideas are welcome and can be sent to info@hookedongold.com to be forwarded to the GPOC board for consideration.

There is still much talk about Cache Creek, and with the mild weather many are taking day outings up there for some fall fun finding gold. The Twin Lakes area is wonderful to visit any time of year you can get up there. The BLM will be touring the Point Bar and Prospector #3 areas on the Arkansas, and will be trying to run past Cache Creek for a look see. Hooked on Gold will be sending our recommendations to the BLM Canyon City office head, Dan Grenard, for possible impovements on the area. Time to get those metal detectors out and swing over some parks that have been used all summer by others while you were in the mountains.

Point Bar temporary closure

POINT BAR RECREATIONAL AND GOLD PROSPECTING AREA

ANNOUNCEMENT

Popular recreational and gold prospecting area near Salida, Colorado, Point Bar was temporarily closed today by the BLM due to heavy rains in the area that have washed out the road near the railroad tunnel. Several R.V.'s are trapped there, and the BLM has sent in emergency crews and equipment to fix the road long enough to get those folks out. More permanent repairs will be made at a later date.

Woody's claim, to the north of the bridge, will be used as a place for the stranded RV's to stay. Woody has generously allowed them to camp there as well as pan, sluice, fish and enjoy any of the other outdoor activities allowed in the area.

Also, the road at Badger Creek is under water at the sand bar, so passage in and out of the south end is also closed at the moment. Stay tuned and we will bring you the latest on the closure as information is available.
