NEWS

Gold is way up this week, and we will be on our way to our first two weeks away this summer. Hooked on Gold will not be publishing a newsletter until after the 15th due to very limited internet service where we will be. Form requests will be answered as we have time until the middle of the month, as we are in prime gold finding season and have many things planned with friends. We will also be spending some time looking at properties and land while we decide what we will be doing next year. The two weeks will fly by and we will be back at home before we know it. Blog posts and pictures will get posted when we have a connection, too.

Have you been finding gold? If so, let us know. We love sharing our experiences with others, and there have been a lot of questions to answer this season. Please continue to be careful around the water. Run off this year will be long, and there is still a lot of snow to melt in the high country. We have run up for a day, here and there, and are amazed at the amount of snow still on the mountains. A drier pattern looks to be with us until monsoon season comes in around the middle of July. The Fourth is ONE WEEK AWAY!

The site template continues to plague me. Now, the Firefox browser is showing the text lettering all wrong, but everything else shows it correctly. Even viewing pages being worked on with Firefox gives me error messages and then refuses to open the page again. If you are using Firefox as your browser you will see some text in the colors it is meant to be in and other text in yellow. Can’t seem to get it to show correctly, and two pages now will not open for editing. Can’t even get a Fourth of July message posted!

Did you try the new toolbar yet? I have had many downloads this past week. I can’t seem to stop playing with the slot machine, myself, and it sure has been a lot of fun. You can find a download button on almost every page under the goldpanner on the left.

River update. Another river drowning occurred this past week near Buena Vista to a kayaker. Please e careful around the high water. Stream Flows will be updated for this week, but will not be while we are away. Hopefully, by the time we get back the rivers will be subsiding a bit, but I expect them to be high well into August. The Ski areas reported the first of June that they will not be in their “mud” season until this next week, a good two months late. In the mean time, you can look up the flows for yourself at:
http://www.stream-flow.allaboutrivers.com/Colorado/river_flow-sCO.html

World Open Panning website has this year’s world wide panning competitions listed and they add more all the time. A great site to visit: http://www.worldopenpanning.homestead.com/ .

Until next week……

NEWS

Do you have gold fever? Boy, we sure do! The first day of summer arrives today at 5:59 p.m. mountain time, and along with it, the welling up of pent up winter frustrations at being cooped up way too long. The first of this years’ gold finds make us pine for the time to be away and wandering the mountains in search of gold. The yellow metal is back up this week, but we wouldn’t care if it was or not. The search for gold spurs us out the door and up the creek! We got camp opened up and found we had been having squatters coming in, making a mess and leaving their party goodies all over the place! No food to be found inside, so they had a BYOF event and couldn’t eat all they brought with them. Glad we went when we did, or it would have been MUCH worse. Plugged up the hole they were using and spent almost an hour vacuuming before we could unpack. OMG, I hate mice!!!!!!

Our golden camp will be closing this year, much to everyone’s sadness. We have known for a few years that this was coming, but hoped it would not be for another year or two. Alas, our caretaker is not well, and this past winter was particularly hard, and so this is our last season in our wonderful camp. We will spend some time this summer to investigate property and other alternatives for next year.

OK, now for some FUN. I found an interesting community toolbar that has been a hoot to test. You will find an example of what the toolbar looks like on the home page of http://www.hookedongold.com/ . I and a friend have spent literally HOURS playing with it. It has updates on the site, games, music, T.V., weather, news, and so much more. I put all my e-mail accounts on it and it pings me when anyone of them gets a message. The dropdown bar lets me click an address and check them without having to log in to all of them. You can add gadgets that you like to it very easily for a custom toolbar. You will find a download button under the “search” space on the menu to your left to download it and try it RIGHT NOW! There is even a chat function, and a Babylon word translator. Very KEWEL!

River update. 2 people have died this past week in rafting accidents. The snow is melting super fast right now, and the streams and rivers are raging. Be careful around it! The Arkansas was reported to have been at over 3700CFS yesterday when the latest accident occurred. Stream flow guides are posted for today and you can check them any day at:
http://stream-flow.allaboutrivers.com/Colorado/river_flow-sCO.html

Got Gold?

Good Morning Gold Prospectors! Have you Got Gold? Sure hope so. With the weather finally warming up here in Colorado, more and more prospectors are out finding gold. Us too! Those first few days in the high country are taxing, though.

GPOC had wonderful crowd participation panning for gold at their panning troughs last weekend in Breckenridge during their Kingdom Days celebration. The outhouse races were a scream! We did get camp opened up and found we had had visitors. They must have had a BYOF party, as there were seeds and evidence of snacks everywhere. Of course there is no food in the trailer during the winer, so the little buggers brought in their own food and began storing it in the trailer. There was also evidence that they had begun to build nests, too! One of them, it seems, chewed a hole in the edge of the floor covering while standing on one of the tires. We plugged it up and made it impossible to get back to it. Some tin nailed all along the edge should keep them out next year. We cleaned for almost an hour before we could unpack after a long Sunday in Breckenridge that left us pretty well exhausted.

Next day we slept in a bit and put everything in order, did a little propsetcing and found some gold, then off to dinner with my sister and her husband. Tuesday was a trip to look at property, as our camp will be closing at the end of this year, and we will be locating in another spot next year. A little prospecting on the way home gave us a little more gold for our vials.

I want to mention the new form for a minute. I am still getting used to how it comes in, and one of the buttons wasn't coded correctly, so if I have missed your request, or you didn't get everything, please email me back and re-request it. Also, make sure you leave me a first name and email address to get the info to you.

Good Prospecting to You,

NEWS

Gold is back down this week, but it’ll be back up in no time! In the meantime, gold prospecting in Colorado seems to be in full swing from the number of requests for information, and reports of found gold I’m getting. Have fun out there, but be aware that the rivers are still high and we need to be careful around the water. All you “DAD’S” out there, have a fantastic Father’s Day! Where would any of us be without YOU!!!!!!!!!

Site should be Ok in Firefox now, but the form page was down with glitches. It took most of the week to get it back to working gain, but with a new program, it is back to taking requests for information A OK. Due to all this work, I did not get the Coloradoans piece posted last week.

Short newsletter this week as we are getting ready for a short trip that includes Kingdom Days in Breckenridge, which celebrates Breckenridge’s days as a kingdom unto itself, where we will be helping GPOC with panning demos. Then, a couple of days to open camp before we will be going back to “work”. Newsletters will probably be shorter and not every Friday for the next 9 weeks as we spend our time out in the field finding our own gold. Good luck to all of you, be courteous to one another, and be safe. Gold Prospecting is hard work, like in digging ditches or working on the railroad in the old days. Watch your back, and your energy levels as well as the altitude. Drink plenty of fluids. It is very easy to forget to drink water and you can dehydrate quickly at high altitude.

A streamflow guide is posted for your convenience while runoff is under way on some Colorado Rivers. You can check those each week on the Gold in Colorado page. I added more rivers this week, so you might be able to find one nearer to you. I check out http://stream-flow.allaboutrivers.com/Colorado/river_flow-sCO.html for my information.

NEWS

Gold is back up this week. That’s about it. There isn’t much news about gold except the usual, and there are rumors that interest rates may get hiked up soon. SURPRISE! Inflation is raising its’ ugly head. Black gold is back in the $138 range after pulling back earlier this week. We read that the Saudi’s are building 4 or 5 mega cities to diversify itself away from oil.

For anyone who cares, it is my birthday today. “Happy bd to me, happy bd to me, happy bd, happy bd, happy bd to me. No, I’m not going to tell you how old I am. Let’s just say, I’m as old as the rocks, but not the dirt that comes from them. I figure, what the heck. Consider the alternative. As long as I can still hold a gold pan, who cares? Arther hasn’t caught up with me yet, and I can still walk in the mountains on a cool morning…..at least I could last week! LOL!

So, have you found gold this past week? If so, you are doing better than we are. The weather is still not cooperating well enough for us to be out much…..YET. It rained and snowed here the last couple of days and temps were chilly. People coming back from the mountains (including us) are shocked at the amount of snow still up high. Cache Creek should be producing some gold already, but the rivers are so high right now, that ANY recreation, even fishing, is hazardous. There is a threat that the Eagle River could be closed to everyone due to the number of people needing rescue. Even the raft companies are having trouble keeping people in the rafts this past week. If you are not finding much gold yet, you can make a detour up to A-Basin and catch some Colorado white gold and their last weekend being open for skiing. They have said they still have plenty of snow for skiing, but they do not have enough personnel who can stay to run the lifts and other equipment, so their season will close due to lack of employees, not snow.

Got news that some of our California panning competitors will be out in August this year to try their hand at the Colorado State Panning Championships this year. Craig, if you are reading this, get ready for some more competition. GPOC beware. Your titles could go to California this year. Or not. Come all, we relish a good three day competition every August in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Site updates….It came to my attention this past week, by a reader, that Firefox is not showing the pages correctly. I am happy to announce that it is fixed AND the forms page is now working again, as well. .

I got a very cute e-mail that pretty much sums up us Coloradoans. I’ll post it tomorrow. Then all of you MIGHT understand us better, but probably not.

High Water Alert for Gold Prospectors

HEADS UP people! Water levels are on the rise, FAST! Check out the "Gold in Colorado" page for today''s update on the rise in river water around Colorado. I have Friday's levels and Monday's levels together so you can get a read on just how fast the water is rising. Most of Colorado's rivers were placed on flood warning, and the Arkansas is on flood watch. There was a report that the Arkansas is going up 6 inches every day, so be careful out there. There were three drowning deaths this past weekend in the rivers all around the state. High water is here to stay with us for a while, so put your lifejackets on if you aren't diving, and if you are diving put on some extra weight, 'cause the rivers are swift with that much water running through them.
