Here's to Gold and Sunshine Awards

Today's post is more about golden friendships than gold.  However, one is not as enjoyable without the other.  The blogger's sunshine award is circulating and I have my own winners to share.  The first goes to His Happy Apple, whose many blogs on several subjects spans many interests from photography to gold prospecting to home schooling.

Snow continues to be forecast this week and our gold pans and sluice boxes lay in wait for mud, dirt and water to be thrown into them.  Each weekend we hope for an outing and each weekend, are greeted with stormy weather and cold temps.  Still waiting, waiting, waiting.

I’ve been catching up a bit on my reading, which has been put on hold for far too long. We have about 3 or 4 days of cold and snowy weather coming at us right now, so I hope to find time to catch up even more. That means I’ll be telling you about some of the information I find as I read.

It was very gray this morning when I got up, and was thinking about how soon March 1st will be here, reopening the Arkansas River to motorized equipment for this gold prospecting season. The storms coming at us will most certainly put some snow on the ground in that area, but March usually brings some nicer weather on the southern sections of the Arkansas, and the water level will be very low. The lower water makes it possible for you to dredge for gold by reaching some of the middle parts of the river with your dredge you can’t get to during the summer. You will have no rafters to deal with in early spring, however, finding open water that isn’t claimed and being worked will be even harder this year.

Some of what I have been reading has to do with California’s suspension of suction dredging. If you do not visit International California Mining Journal’s website at least once a month for some of their free updates on gold mining, I suggest you do. While much is only open to subscribers, you will find good information that is there for everyone. You can find information on their website under the ‘Resources’ tab and then look for Suction Gold Dredging Info. Public Lands for the People (PLP) is the organization fighting this in California courts. There is a lot more, but I probably shouldn’t waste your time with it when you can go and read it for yourself at www.icmj.com . Now, you might not think this has anything to do with you if you aren’t in California, but believe me it will spread if their legislature gets its’ way. We stand to lose another basic right granted to us by U.S. Federal laws.

Got a message from the ‘Tin Pan Prospector’, Chad Watkins this last week. He headed up to Alma just to look things over and get out of town. Also spent a day or two at his cabin in the woods. Nice looking place. One room, no heat except from the wood stove. No electricity, either. Nice and quiet with snow on the ground and the sun shining. Today is probably another story, but hopefully he got home before the skies dumped snow on us again last night. If not, he may have to stay a while. Bummer. Wish I was there. Cabin Fever is running rampant at my house. How about yours?

Our crippled up friend with the hip replacement it doing just fine, too. He is healing up pretty fast and is graduating from his walker to crutches this weekend. Gonna get out of the house and visit his doctor next week to show him how good he’s doing. Still on pain meds, but they said he would be for some time what with the bone trying to attach to the new apparatus. His physical therapist is pleased with his progress and he can also get in and out of his chair without help.

Oh, and BTW, the schist piece we went to see at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science last Saturday wasn’t out of Tarryall, but Telluride, and it still wasn’t being displayed at the museum right now. I also forgot to tell all of you that our oldest grandson was in a rollover accident very early on Saturday morning, too. I can count one of the scariest texts I ever got was “Car is totaled but he’s OK”. Everyone at the museum can attest to the quickness with which I left the gold room to get to a window so I could text back, “WHAT!” Turns out that was the second page of a two page text and the first one told me that the boy was OK and the particulars of the accident that was sent to me by his Dad. Thankfully we were not attending a funeral this week and I would now be in such a deep abyss that even thinking about writing this would be out of the question. Needless to say, it’s been a busy week.

I didn’t take time to find a video for you today and I didn’t find any other interesting links to share. Some weeks are like that. I may find a video for you in the next few days, though, so check back. That’s it for me today. Stay warm if its’ snowing where you are. If it isn’t, then don’t get sunburned! LOL! Oh, and before I forget, I noticed how sloppy my calendar got this month. Don’t know, but it looks like I forgot how to count and how to put in dates. What can I say….it’s February.

So, how’s your game face for this weekend. Got your favorite team to root for? Of course you do! Super Bowl hype for their famous commercials is all over the news and the web. Everyone promises to give you a special look/see at the best of ‘em, but I haven’t seen anything that has actually shown me anything. Of course, if I had the time I could do a search and probably find them, but I have been working on the website and started to upload some changes. You will notice the next time you visit on the home page that the layout is a bit different. My old website template may not be up to the changes I want to make, so I may try to rebuild it this Spring. Hopefully, it will come out similar but with some updated features in the menu. I have had a few comments about the twitter updater, but it updates the blog and home page, so I am compromising and putting it at the bottom of both. Hopefully this will satisfy all of us. If you like to follow along you still can, those who don’t like it don’t have to see it above the fold, and I get to update the pages more regularly.

Anything in stock I can get to you in three days, but the 8th will be the last ship date I can do that and get it there in time for you to wrap.

I have heard that the BLM is absolutely slammed with inquiries about Cache Creek and this summer. I have not heard what their final changes are, so I cannot update you much, but what had been discussed at the end of last year included daily fees for everyone and restrictions on the number of days you can use the area regardless of what equipment you are using. Also, they were looking into hiring a summer employee to cover both the Arkansas and Cache Creek area with someone who would be taking the fee packets in and monitoring the area with ticket writing and enforcement abilities. With the number of people using the area they need better control of the area. GPOC is looking into whether they will be assisting again this year or not. This is before their board now and will be decided in the next month.

Tin Pan Prospecting in Fairplay is getting together an interesting array of properties to prospect on, so check them out this summer, too. Chad’s areas are pay for use, and are on private or patented land. He has a large portion of Mt. Bross and the Dolly Varden properties already under agreement along with some other promising areas that have not committed as of yet. His website is also undergoing a facelift and changes. Looks like a good season of gold prospecting is in store on the East side of Mosquito Pass, too.

If anyone cares, the weather at the Tucson show started out wet and cold, but I got a report today that said it was about 65 degrees. With all of the rain the cacti should bloom well in about a month or so. That’s about when the snakes come out, too. LOL!

GPOC members might like to know that our good friend Glen Orhns is going into surgery on the 10th to finally have his hip replaced. He should have plenty of time to heal up in time to tramp around the mountains this summer prospecting for gold and get in a few hunts next Fall. Too bad he will miss the pig hunt in March, but, hey, nobody said it would be all gravy. Besides, when he went in for the evaluation they said he was a 10. Probably the only time in his whole life he was ever a 10. LOL!

I keep finding a few blogs on gold prospecting, or blogs that put up a page or two on the subject, and I always notice how nicely the articles read and look. I always think I should do the same, but I always seem to come back here just to chat with you about gold, gold prospecting and finding gold while sharing with you some of the interesting things I find on the web and the outings we go on. I should do it more often, but I actually do have a life outside of the web, and today, I don’t have the vacuuming done. Is that ‘real’ enough for ya? I guess I’ll let the website give you the information you want and use the email address to answer questions with. If I do that, I can ramble here all I want to, and you can read it or not as you like. Hopefully, I get some good information and updates out to you, or least a little bit of fun now and again.

The holidays are over, winter has set in and we are hibernating until the sun and longer days come back. Was it Friday already yesterday? The week has gone by fast as we tend to household things and get everything back on a winter schedule. Updates to computers and some just plain down time seemed to be in order, and so the days passed with us not doing much of anything. Everything has been updated to Windows 7 with a few programs are left to be tweeked and reinstalled, but all in all, it went pretty smoothly. Win7 did much of itself, to our surprise. The worst part was buying the external drive to back up everything to in case anything went wrong.

I have a couple of interesting videos about winter time dredging and gold prospecting for you to see. If you are on youtube much, you have probably already viewed them, but it is still interesting to watch these guys finding gold in the snow and ice. The first one was 2 years ago in Leadville http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W6NURzA-jE and the second one was shot last Feb. in Clear Creek, but posted this past summer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rWC08nrKBc .

An interesting article that came up this week was about what gold prices are expected to be at by the end of the year. With it already having hit my projected price of $1200, it isn’t surprising that it is predicted to hit $1500. I’ll wait a bit longer before I decide what I think, as we are a little too early in the year to be able to tell where gold will settle, though. The Western Stock Show will be in town this next week, which means plenty of beef will be on the menu and local eateries will be out to capture every cattleman’s dinner dollar. From reports on the news this past week, they will have a great selection of wonderful food to choose from. We will be having coffee with friends from this summer to catch up with and exchange tall tales about our gold adventures. It looks like we should have pretty decent weather for the events, too, as it is well known that we can have some pretty brutal weather during the show dates. Well, that looks like 30 to me. Those of you on Facebook will understand this last comment, or at least the women will. White with red polka dots. Stay warm and remember it is now time to play with your concentrates that are full of gold.

Happy New Year to Everyone!

Short Gazette today due to the Holiday, but I thought I would send you a spot of news for the weekend. Gold is down again this week and looks to go lower before it trends up again.

With winter officially here, it’s time to start looking at repairing that gold prospecting equipment you had break this past season, and get it up and running before next season begins. Do you have any good gold prospecting tips to share with us about this past gold hunting season? You hear about our adventures all the time. If you have an interesting story to tell, let us know by replying to this blog. Everyone would appreciate the input and the insight. Did you find an easier way to haul dirt, or work a pan, or find gold in some unique way that everyone could learn from? Teach us.

It seems that the heavier denim causes most of the venom to leak out on the fabric and not into your bloodstream; a good thing for metal detectorists and dry washers to be aware of, as well as anyone who walks where the snakes like to be around.

As with all good intentions that fail, things this past week have gotten in the way of my getting back to you before now. Our friend Pedro, from Colombia, S.A., had some extra time in Denver this week, so we spent our week with him. We don’t get these chances often, so we take them when we can. We visited the Denver Museum and the Garden of the Gods, and even though we had snow last weekend, the days we were out were very nice, indeed. Beautiful blue skies and warm weather made for a very enjoyable time together.

I’ll be working on internal linking to Gold ‘N’ Store as I am sure the text links go to the wrong page. I thought about that this past weekend and realized that I still have more work to do on the store, too. I’ll be putting up more page links and getting some more gold listed, as well as working on meta tags and descriptions. Check back on Cyber Monday to see what I have that is new.

Cache Creek still had gold prospectors in and out as of a couple of weeks ago, even with 4 inches of snow still on the ground. The Game and Fish Dept. has been watching for hunters in the area, too. As a conservation area, it is closed to hunting, and there have been several hunters in there this season.

Hope you have been watching gold jump up and down this past week. It touched $1170 before falling back again. Still, a nice run up in the metal. Everyone at the Gem Show was talking about the healthcare bill and the state of the economy around the world. All news bodes well for gold, but silver may be the story of note after all is said and done. It closed today at $18.51.

This also means that there will be no Gazette next Friday as we spend time with our extended families. What a difference a week makes! Freezing temps last week and mid 70’s this week. Being out of doors was really pleasant the past few days, and we are thinking about a metal detecting trip tomorrow. Or perhaps I should say Larry is. I’m not ready to be cold again quite so soon.

Gold, now there was a story this past week. It jumped over $52.00 and even touched $1001.00 before retreating on Thursday. With economic concerns in everyone’s minds, many are picking up gold as a hedge more now. India’s purchase of IMF gold didn’t hurt either, and has caused people to take their gold into the markets in exchange for money. Many are melting older pieces to be made into new for their brides.

I found this interesting article this past week on why the government won’t confiscate your gold. The first reason is that circumstances now are simply not what they were in the 1930’s, another is that we are already off the gold standard. Several other points are very well made in the article. I was wandering around the internet looking for information on another subject when I came across this very god website about Victor, Colorado at http://www.victorcolorado.com/history.htm

Oregon has been in the news concerning gold prospecting and dredging for gold. ICMJ has an article on their Governor wanting to have many acres withdrawn from mineral entry so that all gold prospecting and mining will be halted or severely restricted in those areas. ICMJ has a great quote in it’s article by Mike Higbee about dredgers and fishermen. http://icmj.com/index.php for more info. Wow! getting everything written and posted while being involved with all we are doing in reallife is becoming more challenging. I will have several posts in the next couple of days concerning gold and Cache Creek, and other things going on.

Today, the UTV is finished and ready to roll. Cloudy weather may keep us close to 'home' and not out finding gold, but we should be able to take our new toy out for a spin on some back roads to see how it handles. That's it in the photo, and yeah it's for us old people. Originally developed for light duty use on a farm, it looks like it will be just what we need to get around on those roads we cannot get the truck up.

The gold prospecting season here on the Arkansas is starting to heat up, even though weather has been a hinderance. Most days have been warm until early afternoon when we get showers, sometimes lasting into the evening. Everything here seems to be about a month behind and we still have cottonwood cotton flying around. We have found gold with our pans while we are hosting at Cache Creek and taken the metal detectors out to find some more gold, too. Website should show you the changes in the claim status at Cache Creek in the next day or so. We have active claims now at the cemetery, so you need to stay out of there. All for now. Stay tuned!

Gold Prospecting in the Rain

Last week was dismally wet with rain nearly eveny day. This is one of the last shots I got of the mountains before everything went cloudy and grey. I have a couple of great shots out my back window of the park and how wet and gloomy the day was yesterday posted on hookedongoldprospecting. You can see them on the main page.

Snow lines were below the trees today as we sped our way through South Park on our way back to Arvada to open mail and finish getting everything ready for our summer escape. We will still have a few trips back and forth, but we should be able to stay most of the time in B.V.

We have injoyed our stay at Snowy Peaks, too, even though the weather has been less than great. Even in the rain, the staff goes busily about their chores and everything in the park is kept tidy. Six shower/restrooms and an onsite laundry makes keeping everything clean very convenient. Many activities are scheduled throughout the week in addition to everything that is going on in Buena Vista.

With all the snow and rain we have had these past couple of months, I want to remind everyone that we are in Spring runoff in Colorado, and all the streams and rivers are running high and swift. It only takes a couple on inches of swift water to knock you down and send you tumbling along the boulders. 6 inches can turn a car over.

Gold prospecting season is heating up. Have fun out there, but remember you are looking and finding gold in wild places, so be careful.

Snow yesterday and today has kept me busy with the snow shovel and taking pictures. ;-) We did get out and do some metal detecting last Sunday and came home with about $2.00 worth of coins that I posted and blogged about on the new community site while I was on there doing administrative updates. APRIL 1st! Yes, it’s April Fools day, but it is also the opening day for this seasons' motorized prospecting equipment use on the Arkansas River. That means on Wednesday you can take you highbanker or dredge out and play in the water. You WILL have to have your 2 year permit in place for that, and you can find the forms on the http://www.blm.gov/ site on their page about the Arkansas River bond, and scroll down past the picture of Woody to where you find the sentence in green about the form. Click on that and you will open a PDF file that you can save or print off to fill in and send off.

I have decided to take the panning tips form down and replace it with 5 pages including the 4 panning tips. Since the bucket classifier is something that needs some knowledge of what you are doing, I have put an e-mail link into the DIY Bucket Classifier to request the information, but it may pop under the page and you will need to drop the page down to fill it out and send it. Subject line is already filled in and all I need is a first name and the message will send me your e-mail address to send the info to. It has stopped the spammers dead in their tracks since I took it down yesterday. LOL!

So much gets reported on twitter, I’m not sure where I am this week. Alaska’s Mt. Redoubt has been erupting since Sunday, and yesterday sent ash 12 miles into the atmosphere. I’d like to see how that stacks up against the power plants that are supposed to be causing the “climate change” in the arctic. Oh, wait! I DO! Over one years’ of man’s pollutants cannot compare with one volcanic eruption of pollutants thrown into the UPPER atmosphere. I also saw a reminder about the volcano in South America that blew its’ top in the late 80’s. I remember how shortly after that one, scientists were worried about the ozone hole that then magically closed up in, what, ’92? But, man was supposedly be to blame for that one too.

We deal with wilderness, protected status, and roadless issues, but did you hear about the energy company that put up wind turbines to make power with, only to find out they could not cross an area of land in protected status to deliver the power to the grid? True story. DID see this one coming, though. Wind turbines and solar power panels have to be out in the middle of nowhere, but getting the power to the grid is a huge problem with rights of way over land.

OOPPS! Am I “off topic”? I warned you about winter and having to deal with not being out prospecting for gold. LOL! Eric, I AM jealous of your gold prospecting trek to Utah this last week during Spring Break. Hope you post pictures for all of us on the ning community site this next week. I did not have time to check my alerts for news with past week as the new ning site has had me pretty busy with set up. I’ll give you a blog or two this next week with what I find. In the mean time…..

Well, the Feds have finally passed a law forbidding anyone from picking up rocks on Federal Land. (Probably includes yellow ones, too.) Don’t know, but that probably puts a crimp on any type of exploration on Federal Land. http://worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=89733 gives the story.

Gold was diving in heavy intraday trading to finish this week at $939.60. It had held in the $945 range for most of the day before dropping in the last minutes of trading.

The Jeffco Jewelry, Gem and Mineral show started today and will run through Sunday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. This show isn’t very big, but the vendors that attend are awesome, with a great selection of items including grab bags, and demos by the gemological society here in the Denver area. Best of all, it’s FREE and open to the public. We attend every year, and have a lot of fun along with finding some nice items that we can’t live without. LOL! The Jewelry and Gem show will be next weekend at the Merchandise Mart in the back, and I will get to visit the Emeralds again for three days in T.L.E International’s booth.

Are you getting anxious to get out and do some gold prospecting? We are, but we are also stuck in “work” mode until the end of April when Larry will retire unless the bottom falls out of our lives before then. Ya NEVER know what may be lurking around the corner. February has been mild by comparison to past years, and it makes Spring fever come a bit quickly.

In case you missed it last week, I had a twitter link to a story on how many people in India are selling their gold right now instead of buying it. The price is so high that many are selling their heirlooms to get cash. Now, it isn’t the only reason the price of gold has fallen in the past few days, but it does contribute as India buys more gold jewelry than any other country for its’ marriage season. This means that there will be more gold jewelry available in the market place that does not have to be bought outside that market, thus reducing the amount of gold jewelry they will need to buy on the open market. However, this also means that there will be more gold available to other markets if the gold bull market heats up later this year. So far, a stronger dollar is helping to keep the price of gold down, but that can only last for just so long before demand for the yellow metal exceeds supply.

Another report on gold output states that China and the U.S. have outperformed South Africa in gold output. South Africa says this is due to the ongoing problems it has been having with electrical supplies among others. In other news, gold coins world wide are becoming very hard to find. As demand is rising, coin makers will not keep up and the value will rise, some many times the spot price of gold. If gold is closing this week above its 20 day moving average, it's a good sign it will continue to rise for the near future. This all means that the placer gold you found last summer is worth more today than it was then. This year’s take will be worth more as well.

The continuing saga of roadless areas being closed produced this report I saw this week on Colorado’s roadless plan. This effects prospectors directly as the closing of dirt roads continues and limits access to the public of public lands. These areas are not “roadless”, they have many dirt roads that are not marked in them and are still considered “roadless”. You can read more about this in this article HERE. What I’d like clarified is exactly what “roadless” means. My opinion is that it is a way to get around the wilderness laws and to create “wilderness” without an act of Congress. Protected status is also used this way. This means that the public is severely limited in its’ access to public lands. We seem to be continually squeezed into smaller and smaller spots that we can access, and then everyone complains that there is so much use that those places are closed off, too. With roadless areas becoming more prevalent and the Feds now saying you can’t even pick up rocks on Federal Land, what is a body supposed to do? Stay in their house and play Wii? Gotta be a better solution. Oh, yeah. Join a gym and watch the out of doors go by on the screen of your treadmill. HA!

I followed a link off of twitter today that took me to a site with USGS maps of all the earthquakes recorded for this past week. Kinda interesting, and when I woke up to how long I had been studying it, I clicked out of it before saving the link so you could see it. Since I’m late with this newsletter, I’ll go look for it a little later and blog it to you in a day or so. (In case you didn’t see the twitter, some tree trimmers blew up a transformer in my neighborhood and the electricity was off for 2 hours of prime writing time.)

Last, I can’t go away without lamenting the closure of the Rocky Mountain News. I’ve loved and read the Rocky for over 50 years. It’s passing after almost 150 years in publication is a sad day for everyone. The Denver Post has generously decided to take over all the subscribers to the Rocky, but the slant to the whole paper is way too liberal for me. We won’t be taking a print paper in our household for the first time EVER. I spent part of the day adding news agencies to my twitter followings to get updates on what is going on in the world. Sad day for print, but an even sadder day for balanced reporting.

You will be happy to note as the days turn into spring, that my winter ranging into other territory besides gold prospecting will soon be over. I do try to bring it back to prospecting for gold, and hopefully, am successful in that attempt. So much is going on right now that does affect you and prospecting, that it is hard not to tell you about what I find out that can determine the success of your ambitions for finding gold. Some of it pertains to Colorado, some to all of the U.S. Soon, we will be out finding gold and reporting on what we are doing. Hooked on Gold page Updates

Dashing off a quick note today. The regular newsletter will be published tomorrow, but I wanted to let you know that the pages under "Articles of Interest" were all reworked, organized, and republished this week with one new page added to the group, called Why Learn To Use a Gold Pan?. Anyone along the Front Range of Colorado who isn't out in this gorgeous weather is missing a day to be remembered. Gold fever has us wishing we were in Arizona prospecting for gold, but on days like today, it's easier to let the day pass pleasantly and think of prospecting we did in the past and will do in the future. New adventures will await us this summer during our regular prospecting season, I am sure! In the mean time, how about a good book to read on prospecting until the Arkansas River opens up to motorized equipment April 1st.

And Just Where Do You Think the Price of Gold Is Going in '09?

So, up, down, sideways, or? Gold prices for this year are being predicted all over the place. $2200 an ounce, $500 an ounce, who do you believe, and what do you do with your gold investments? Miners going forward, or downward? What’s the outlook and how do you interpret all the data? Everyone has to decide for themselves, and of course, no one can say for sure, but reading and listening to everyone might get you on track.

Long term, most analysts remain bullish, but short term is another thing. Like I said, I read between $2200 for a high to $500 for a low. My opinion? I think gold will either hold where it is or drop in the near term, but bounce back by year's end....I'm just not sure how much. With so much money being pumped into economies around the world, more people should be sheltering into gold, but they aren’t, which might mean they are all simply scared to do anything. Gold recently broke below its’ long term moving average, which does not look good for it going up right away, and its’ highs have been lower, and lower.

I’m not sure if gold will start back up after the middle of the year or a little later. In the mean time you can watch for some very good buying opportunities in the near future in gold. If it makes it back to $500 an ounce, I know I’ll be buying. If it gets to the $2200 by the end of the year that others predict, I’ll be selling. I think the highs and lows will more likely be in between somewhere no matter what happens, as things usually are never as bad or as good as the extremes predict. In the future, gold is sure to go up as inflation heats up by sometime in 2010. You cannot crank out all these dollars and not have inflation in your future.

And what about the gold miners? Well, when you are dealing with stocks, you must consider the companys first. If you wish to invest in them, make sure you are buying the COMPANY, and not the movement in the stock. In general, right now, you should be looking for good companies that have lots of cash on hand and are leaders in their sector with an excellent business plan, and a low price for what you are getting.

Another investment venue in gold is gold coins. These are becoming harder and harder to get, and, as most of you know, the U.S. mint ran out of their Buffaloes last Fall. Older gold coins will continue to be a good investment when gold prices are down. They appreciate rather fast when demand for gold goes up, as many people will invest in the coins before anything else.

What does this mean for gold prospectors? Well, the raw gold you find will only go up in value. Your major cost is your equipment and your time and labor. Find more gold and you’ll be worth more, that’s for sure, but remember that you are NOT a hobbyist OR a recreationalist. You need to see your activities as FOR PROFIT. I have another piece coming out later this week about the new things the U.S. Forest Service has to say about these attitudes. Until then...

Platinum is finally trading above gold yesterday and today…..but only by about $8.00. My how far it has fallen! If you are looking for gold coins for Christmas, you are probably having a hard time finding them. Most coin dealers can’t get their hands on them, so there are very few around to sell. I read that the World Gold Council says gold jewelry continues to be in the top three items women in the U.S. spend discretionary money on. Now, THAT was a huge shock! I had no idea that women loved gold jewelry that much. ;>) You can read the Market Oracle to find information on what inflation in the coming years will do to the price of gold. http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article7811.html

Two more gold coins were found in Salvation Army kettle in Des Moines, Iowa this past week. Maybe we have been looking for gold coins in all the wrong places! Don’t forget the GPAA Stanton dig which is usually the end of December. Not much else is going on in prospecting with the holidays here, and I haven’t had the time to do a lot of research. We are giving an old metal detector to our grandsons for Christmas, and we are sure they will have fun figuring out how to use it and digging up any coins they find. They have been allowed to run Grandpa’s machine a time or two with supervision, and we are sure they will figure out how to get this one to work. Ah, another generation of prospectors in the making!

Do you have all of your Christmas Shopping finished? NO? Unfortunately, most of the gold here in Colorado is covered up with snow and ice right now, so I can’t even give you the suggestion to go and pan some gold out for gifts, thus giving you an excuse to go gold prospecting. Sure would not mind doing that myself, but I’m afraid we simply can’t take off right now and enjoy ourselves. So, I guess we get to stay put and shovel snow, attend Holiday get togethers, and sing Christmas Carols with the rest of you. We are really looking forward to the very nice weather predicted for us Christmas day through at least the weekend.

With the Holidays upon us, I will not be publishing a newsletter for the next two Friday, but I will put up a blog post or two. We have several get togethers planned and guests who are with us now and will be through the middle of January. Merry Christmas to all of you, and have a Happy (Not TOO happy) New Year!

Watching gold and platinum prices is kind of heart stopping, isn’t it? What is keeping gold from advancing as the stock market falls? Isn’t it supposed to do well when stocks are not? Confusing questions, but I have been reading some accounts that make a bit of sense as to why gold is not at $1500 as some had predicted. It’s simple, really. As equities have declined, some investors have been forced to sell their gold holdings to raise cash. After all, when everything else is in the dumper, gold DOES still have a cash value.

Russia finally passed a bill to abolish their state monopoly on platinum group metals that have previously been exported through Almazjuvelirexport. It took them 4 years to get it through their parliament. They do produce a large share of the world’s palladium and platinum, but with the prices down, whether they have monopoly or not may not matter.

Did you hear about Freeport McMoRan? They suspended their dividend to their investors and are planning on curtailing much of their mining operations due to the drop in metal prices. I know a few people who might be affected. That’s about it for news since Wednesday. Your DIY links are below.

Does it seem to you like time is speeding along at warp speed? Things are happening in our lives so fast now, it seems like every day has a month’s amount of stuff going on in it. It is hard to stay focused on any one thing for more than a few hours a week, so if I seem like I am pulled in many directions and not focused on gold right now, you would be right. I am still looking at and for information on gold, but it is getting harder to spend enough time to be really effective. Then, it IS the Holiday Season, too, and that is part of it.

We ARE looking at having to be ready for Christmas celebrations early, as we did Thanksgiving, as much of the family will not be in Colorado that week. I am devoting a few hours a week to helping my son’s business with some office work that I can do from home, as there are many things coming together for them VERY quickly, now. Two new companies may be spun off from their parent company, already, to help in distribution and development of products coming out next year. If you don’t think that has anything to do with gold, you would be oh, so, wrong. When this pops, we will have time and money to devote to some very ambitious projects that include finding gold and the public, so think good thoughts for us and you could profit from this as well. It has been the desire of hooked on gold for more than 10 years to do something for the public in gold prospecting here in Colorado, so bear with me while this project goes into the stratosphere and beyond. You’ll get your updates and what we are planning as it all unfolds, and remember: Eat Beef and Drink Milk! LOL!

Golden Holidays

Thanksgiving week has crept up on me and I realized this morning that I did not tell you that a short Newsletter will be posted Wednesday with some interesting links for you to play with while you are resting from your shopping. Things are still hopping at our house, so it has still been difficult to stay ahead of everything. There is a lot of news concerning gold and gold prospecting, and I have several links to blogs and pages you might be interested in. I am very excited about a new affiliate that has EVRYTHING YOU WANT for gold prospecting, too! Equipment, books, maps, pans, classifiers, you name it! You could access them on your own, but, if you go through me, I get to earn a few pennies to help with my website expenses. (Yeah, believe it or not, running a website DOES cost money!) I don’t get a click through, so if you don’t find what you want at the price you want, my affiliate isn’t out any money. So, are you cold enough yet? We got some light drizzle this morning that froze on the roadways due to temps just under freezing. I still have not turned on the furnace, yet, as it just hasn’t been cold enough in the townhouse to warrant it. I don’t know, but maybe I’m somewhat resistant to cold from all that panning in cold mountain streams, and metal detecting at high altitudes. I’ll tell ya, there have been some of those days that the car was a welcome refuge from the biting winds! Still, I wish it was still summer so I could wander in the woods with a gold pan and a shovel. I remember the smell of the pines and the beauty of the fall colors, listening to the rushing of the river, and wondering if we will have enough water at Cache Creek to pan in. Did you see any wildlife? I mean, in the wild, not in the zoo. The mountains looming in the distance, the call of gold in the gold bearing areas all add to the lure of the gold fields. Ah, how we live for summer!


We celebrated our 37th year of marriage this past week. Ok, celebrate is a bit strong for what we do, but we remember it. LOL! We were married just before Thanksgiving, and so there are always a lot of activities going on at that time and we often have a quiet dinner at home with cards and flowers. Or not.


As I am writing this I see that gold is up and platinum is only about $17.40 more than gold! WOW! How far platinum has fallen since its’ high earlier this year. I am also reading that gold coins are in scarce supply and demand is starting to surge. With the stock market in the dump, the gold ETF’s are trading at well under the spot price of gold, so the paper is not a good investment right now.


There have been a lot of blog and URL links this week that you might be interested in. Here are a few. The first is a blog by a man who lives in Alaska and he writes about the state and its trails. HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION! And keep those you love close, in proximity and in your heart. We have much that is and will happen now and in the New Year, and much that will be lost. That isn’t a metaphor, but a fact. Our oldest son’s business is soaring, but we may lose one of our parents before that is realized. I believe that all things unfold as they are meant to….I just wish sometimes I could manipulate the timing. Be safe out there and until next week……

Google Alerts on Gold and Gold Prospecting

Reminder from this Summer. I can smell the breeze, can you?

Hey all you gold prospectors out there! Man, o, man has the Fall been busy this year!!!! I keep thinking I will have time to blog, and the next thing I know I’m climbing the stairs to go to bed! I have finally subscribed to Google Alerts, and they are sending me some very interesting information I will share with you as space and time permits. There are several interesting blogs you might like to follow, or read their post that I link to. It should give me some more to blog about, too.

Market Rubbemeker’s blog on gold is very interesting, and follows some of my own thinking on the subject. Give this page a read and see if you don’t gain some insite on this page entitled So That's Why Gold Prices Are Up Today .

For those of you who like the Minelab metal detectors, you will find this forum of interest. I am referencing a page on it that is describing coils at Re: 5x10" DD/HF Coil and the 6" DD/HF Coil - Visible Differences , and please note that the page is almost a year old. Doesn’t matter, though, ‘cause the info is still the same.

Baby boy is in the Philippines now for three days. Haven’t heard from him yet, but I think they started their classes today, and they are teaching at night. Might be a bit confusing right now, what with jetlag, nights that are days, and all they needed to do to prepare for their classes. Hopefully he will give us a jingle this weekend.

Elections are finally over!!!! Yah! Dems in control, though, are not good for public lands. They like to think that the public has no right to use ‘em. Also means that we will continue to lose places to prospect for gold and finding gold will become more difficult. ICMJ had some interesting things to say about them in their latest issue that I’ll cover tomorrow in the newsletter.
